The Slope Briefing
[Updated 8.1.2026 at 19.15]
Frost determines the snowmaking and opening of the slopes – snowmaking is in progress!
Ski slopes operate on snow made by snow cannons. Natural snow is not durable enough in the changing weather conditions of winter.
Snowmaking requires a minimum of -5 degrees Celsius, and the cold must continue for more than one day at a time. Snow needs frost to harden even after it comes out of the snow cannon.
This season’s snowmaking started on Tuesday 30.12.2025. In total, the slopes require about 12-14 days and nights of snowmaking, and then some shaping before the slopes are ready for skiers.
Sometimes snowmaking can be carried out continuously for an entire two-week period, but there are often breaks when the cold disappears in between.
- Update Sun 4.1.2026 at 16.15: On Saturday morning, the frequency converter controlling the main pump broke down at the pumping station. The snowmaking had to be shut down, as there was no water for the cannons.
During the same day, the local Suupohjan Sähköpalvelu, in cooperation with Sähkö-Ojala, managed to find a similar part, which we borrowed from Isojoen Lämpö. During the night, the Sähköpalvelu installers made the necessary installations. On Sunday morning, the snowmaking was able to be set up again, and in the afternoon the cannons were working at full capacity again!
BIG THANKS to all these companies and people for helping us with the situation ”at alarm speed”! - Update Thu 8.1.2026 at 19.00: Snowmaking has progressed in good frost. Currently, one of the five cannons is on the sledding hill and the others are on the ski slopes. There are still areas without snow on the slopes, so snowmaking will continue throughout the weekend.
After that, we can start shaping the snow, preparing the jumps and rails, and the lifts. Opening day is Saturday 17.1.2026 at 12.00!
Snow production periods 2026
- Tue 30.12.2025 – Sat 3.1.2026 (3.5 days)
(the interruption was caused by a malfunction in the pumping station equipment) - Sun 4.1.2026 – continues
NOTE! During the snowmaking, the entire slope area is an active construction site, so moving around on the slopes is prohibited! The road to the top will be closed off with a fence for safety reasons.
The BBQ-hut area and parking area are open as normal.
